MEET JOHN

John has been proud to call San Marino home since 1969. He is a graduate of K.L. Carver Elementary, H.E. Huntington Middle School, and San Marino High School, and is thankful to have such deep roots in the community.

John has two bachelor’s degrees in philosophy of religion and psychology from Trinity University in San Antonio. John then returned to San Marino to attend graduate school at Loyola-Marymount University where he received his master’s degree in counseling psychology. He met his wife and they were committed to stay in San Marino to raise their daughter, who also graduated from the same San Marino schools. His daughter now lives in Colorado. Watching his daughter grow up in the same childhood home and schools was one of his most meaningful experiences as a father.

His long-term familiarity with the community gives him an appreciation of the elements that make San Marino such a wonderful place to live. He values the excellent schools, superb community safety, beauty of the residential neighborhoods and most especially the small-town feel of the community. John has also seen the changes in San Marino over the years, and the benefits and strengths those changes have added to the city. Increased diversity and evolving generations have added new perspectives, enhanced support for education, and new community connections.

One of John’s greatest strengths lies in his commitment to community service. One of his first connections with the community was through Ss. Felicitas and Perpetua Church, where he has been a member and volunteer since 2006. He has served three years on the City’s Design Review Committee (2015-2018) and eight years on the City’s Planning Commission (2018-2026). John has also been a volunteer with the San Marino Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) since 2011. He then became involved as a volunteer with the high school Grad Night construction activities when his daughter graduated from San Marino High School in 2013, with continuous involvement every year since.

Professionally John does quality improvement and data analysis work in the health insurance industry. His work requires navigating state and federal regulations, collaboration with regulatory agencies, to ensure accountability and excellence. His professional work and service on city advisory boards have taught him that having answers isn’t as important as having a willingness to listen and collaborate. He has witnessed the incredible depth of creative, practical and financial talent amongst city residents and city staff. John believes collaboration is one of the most important factors for success, and is excited about the opportunity to be a part of fostering collaboration in San Marino.
